SURVEY CREW CHIEF

Seeking an experienced full-time Survey Crew Chief. The position will be primarily field based, but may require some office work in times of inclement weather.

Civil engineering firm, specializing in transportation, roadway and bridge design, that has been growing consistently for the past 25 years. The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for the direction, coordination, implementation, control, and completion of survey field work for roadway and bridge projects, while remaining aligned with strategy, commitments, and goals of the organization. The Survey Crew Chief manages field survey work as assigned and coordinates with office staff to ensure projects are completed on time and under budget. The Survey Crew Chief reports to the Director of Surveying.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Leads, trains, and supervises other survey field personnel as requested.
  • Maintains working knowledge of industry standards for field survey equipment and procedures.
  • Maintains and adheres to acceptable field procedures as set forth by management.
  • Cares for and maintains equipment in good working order.
  • Gathers field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods; sets up, adjusts, operates, and maintains surveying equipment, including but not limited to electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles.
  • Prepares field notes and drawings; performs field surveying for roadway, bridge, utility and land development projects; including installation of survey monuments and construction stakes, locates and establishes vertical and horizontal control, right of way, monuments, corners, boundaries, and property lines.
  • Performs field and office survey calculations for construction stake out and field reconnaissance.
  • Performs public records search at various local and state government offices as required.
  • Performs field work for ALTA/ACSM land title surveys, location control route surveys, topographic surveys and construction stake out as required.
  • Reads and comprehends plans, specifications, surveys and maps.
  • Experience with Trimble survey equipment a plus

Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Minimum 3 years of land survey experience.
  • Experience with INDOT and/or ODOT standards/code lists and survey requirements specific to roadway and bridge projects preferred.
  • Discretion and integrity are recognized requirements for the job.

  • Ability to tolerate and manage stress.
  • Ability to work alone or with a teammate.
  • May require overnight stays for extended periods of time.
  • Requires work in inclement weather for extended periods.
  • Requires work in adverse terrain such as steep hills, bridge embankments, creek, river and stream banks, in/on and around bodies of water as well as in vegetated areas such as but not limited to farm fields, dense woods, wetlands and tall grass.
  • Requires work in roadways, rails ways, airports, manufacturing facilities, construction sites and confined spaces.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and be insurable.
