Job Description

Job Summary

The Produce Department Manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations in the Produce Department. Duties primarily revolve around the general management of your direct reports, which include, but are not limited to, providing, and demonstrating task instructions, keeping attendance, and measuring key performance indicators. You will be expected to keep records and produce reports that will be used to review team performance.

The Produce Department Manager will need to have excellent communication skills and a passion for excellence. Previous leadership experience is a plus.

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Responsible for managing department activities related to stocking, pricing, and rotation of merchandise.
  • Responsible for ordering, receiving, display and sale of products in accordance with company quality and merchandising standards. 
  • Responsible for semi-annual inventory counts.
  • Control department expenses by enhancing operations, meeting budget goals and control shrinkage and pilferage.
  • Coordinate with Store Director to develop marketing events and other promotional activities to maximize sales and profit.
  • Manage department inventory control to maintain proper stock level so that there are no out-of-stock and overstock products.
  • Ensure the work environment is clean and safe.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Responsible for checking in vendors when needed.
  • Assist in interviewing, hiring, and training new staff.
  • Manage department records on employees and evaluate employee performance.
  • Dispose of all outdated and spoiled produce, which is no longer suitable for sale.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by resolving customer concerns and problems in a timely manner.
  • Train the produce team on new policies and product knowledge.
  • Ensure great customer service at all levels.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the needs of the business/department/organization. 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Previous leadership experience preferred.
  • ServSafe Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Reliable, with high integrity and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Professional appearance and attitude.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Proactive organizational skills.
  • High school diploma.
  • Ability to keep a positive attitude in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing, walking, sitting, lifting 50%
  • Using hands to finger, handle or feel, talking hearing, tasting, smelling 25%.
  • Reaching with hands and arms, climbing, or balancing 25%

Lifting Requirements

  • Ability to lift the following pounds safely:
  • Up to 10 pounds 37.5%
  • Up to 25 pounds 37.5%
  • Up to 50 pounds 25%

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the Company.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers. 

Work Environment

  • Indoor working conditions include wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather).
